Description
Johnson Atelier is a premier art fabrication and conservation facility on the Grounds For Sculpture campus in Hamilton, New Jersey. Our 75,000 square foot facility specializes in translating creative concepts into physical reality through design, fabrication, and finishing services. Our skilled 14-person team handles projects from digital modeling through final installation, with capabilities including 5-axis CNC milling, KUKA robotic fabrication, metal fabrication and welding, woodworking, 3D scanning, and expert finishing. Our industrial paint booth - the tallest commercial booth on the East Coast - features multiple paint mixing and finishing systems. We work collaboratively with artists, institutions, and productions to solve complex fabrication challenges, from engineering structural solutions for monumental installations to replicating historical details or producing custom props on tight timelines. Our experience spans major museums and public art commissions nationwide.
Special Skills & Experience
Johnson Atelier has over five decades of experience fabricating complex sculptural and architectural elements. Our capabilities are well-suited for film and television production requiring rapid prototyping, precise replication, and high-quality finishing.
FABRICATION & ENGINEERING:
We translate 2D concepts, sketches, or reference images into fully-engineered 3D objects. Our team scales elements up or down, reverse-engineers from photographs or historical references, and solves structural challenges for large-scale installations. We've fabricated everything from 20-foot sculptural elements to intricate details, working in steel, aluminum, stainless steel, wood, foam, and composite materials.
DIGITAL CAPABILITIES:
Our digital workflow includes 3D scanning, CAD modeling, and CNC milling. We rapidly prototype elements, create molds from digital files, and mill complex forms, moving quickly from concept to physical mock-up.
METAL FABRICATION & WELDING:
Our metal shop handles steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and bronze with MIG, TIG, and stick welding. We've produced structural armatures, decorative metalwork, and finished metal elements for installations nationwide.
FINISHING & PAINT:
Our industrial paint booth accommodates elements up to 30 feet tall, with expertise in automotive finishes, powder coating, custom color matching, patina application, and specialty finishes. We replicate period-appropriate finishes or create custom surface treatments.
PROJECT EXPERIENCE:
We've collaborated with leading artists on museum exhibitions and public art commissions for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum, and Madison Square Park. Our work ranges from historically accurate reproductions to contemporary installations.
TIMELINE & COLLABORATION:
We work with production schedules and can accommodate rush timelines. Our team collaborates with creative directors, production designers, and art departments to ensure fabricated elements meet requirements.
