Justice William J. Brennan Jr. Courthouse
United States / Jersey City, New Jersey
Location ID: #10150965
The six-story structure was originally built between 1906 and 1910. It is considered to be an outstanding example of the Beaux-Arts architectural style in the United States. The Courthouse was designed by Jersey City native Hugh Roberts, twice a president of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
The William J. Brennan Courthouse is the seat of Hudson County’s government. This courthouse went from grandiose to abandoned, before ultimately being saved from destruction and restored into the architectural wonder we know and love today. Stop by to see museum-quality murals by artists like Howard Pyle and Charles Yardley Turner, and enjoy the stunning marble workmanship this place is known for.
As of 2025, the courthouse has ten working courtrooms and also houses the offices of the County Executive, the Hudson County Surrogate and the Hudson County Bar Association; in the past it has been used in a number of television programs and movies, including scenes in the television series Law & Order, and the movies, the Joker and A Complete Unknown.
